The Field Our Kids Deserve: The Transformation of Gautier Street Ballpark
How City Leadership, Local Businesses, and the Biloxi Shuckers Are Building a Safer, Brighter Future for Moss Point Youth
In Moss Point, a baseball diamond is more than just dirt and grass. It is a classroom for character and a place where the community comes together. On Saturday, February 7th, the Gautier Street Ballpark became a living example of what happens when leadership and local pride collide. Under the vision of Athletic Director Catori Pollard and the Parks and Recreation Department, the mission is clear: Moss Point is not just rebuilding a park, it is rebuilding the foundation of youth sports.
A Professional Touch for Our Hometown Heroes
The highlight of the day was seeing the Biloxi Shuckers trade the stadium lights for the Gautier Street sun. The Shuckers’ crew worked directly alongside city staff and volunteers to install critical safety and aesthetic upgrades. They added safety yellow fence top protection to ensure young athletes can chase down fly balls without the risk of injury. They also transformed the outfield by installing professional grade grey vinyl windscreens. These new coverings feature prominent Moss Point branding and replace the old chain link view with a polished, professional atmosphere.
Built by the Community for the Community
This transformation was a true team effort driven by specialized expertise and local heart. The Biloxi Shuckers took the lead on installing brand new backstops, bringing the fields up to a professional standard. Supporting this massive effort was the team from Home of Grace, who provided the essential labor and manpower to help the Shuckers get the job done.
Local businesses also stepped up to support the workers and beautify the grounds. Ski Heating & AC and Pep Street Wings teamed up to provide lunch for the entire crew, fueling the day’s progress. Meanwhile, Cannon Nissan of Moss Point continued its dedicated mission to beautify the city by painting the dugouts. Their team added fresh color and murals that bring a new level of energy and identity to the entire complex.
The Home Stretch
The momentum continues into next week as Turf Masters arrives to put on the finishing touches. Their team will be on site to install the foul poles, complete the landscaping, and finally set the bases in the dirt to mark the field as ready for play. These final steps will ensure the ballpark is in peak condition for the upcoming season.
An Open Invitation: Registration Extended
With the fields looking better than ever, the City of Moss Point wants to make sure every child has a chance to play. Because of the excitement surrounding these improvements, Peewee Baseball registration has been extended for one more week. The new deadline to sign up is Friday, February 13th – Register Here.
The city remains committed to providing safe facilities and strong programs that help young athletes grow. We look forward to seeing the community fill the stands when Opening Day arrives in mid-March.
