On the Mississippi Blues Trail

The River City sound.

Downtown Moss Point holds a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail, and it is worth a stop. Long before the city incorporated, the African American community here produced an abundance of talented musicians, many who entertained along the Gulf Coast and some who traveled across the country and overseas with prominent bands and musical troupes.

Charles Fairley, who played in the bands of Otis Redding and Guitar Slim, heads the list, alongside Charles Polk, Clyde Needham, Carlton Reese, Henry Dees, Otis Carter, and the Nelson brothers, Romie, Lamar, and Elijah. The sound still carries today through the Magnolia High School band.

Two rivers wrap the city. The Escatawpa slips past downtown, and the Pascagoula, the largest unimpeded river system in the lower forty-eight states, opens into miles of marsh and birdsong. The best way to see Moss Point is from the water.
