If you needed proof that Moss Point knows how to show up for its own, this week delivered it in boxes, bags, and truckloads of canned fruit.

The annual Moss Point March of the Mayors food drive brought residents, alumni groups, city leaders, and first responders together for one purpose: making sure families across our city have food on the table. And Moss Point answered that call the way Moss Point always does.

Mayor Billy Knight Sr. was right in the middle of it all, rallying support and encouraging donations from every corner of the city. He was joined by Wencie Powell, representing the Alumni Queens and the Moss Point Alumni Association, Class of 1986. Seeing graduates come back to pour into their hometown says everything about the kind of people this city produces.

And it was not just one class. Moss Point High School alumni spanning decades stepped up to make this year’s March of the Mayors food drive one of the strongest yet. Participating classes included 1978, 1980, 1990, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2008. That is multiple generations of graduates who still carry Moss Point with them and prove it every chance they get.

Once the donations started stacking up at drop off locations across the city, the Moss Point Fire Department went to work. Chief Jason Davis, Lt. Matthews, and Firefighter Montoya loaded up and hit the road, collecting canned fruit from site after site and filling boxes until there was no room left in the truck.

These are the same men who respond when you call 911, and on this day they responded to a different kind of need with the same dedication.

All of those donations are now on their way to Extra Table in Gulfport, a nonprofit that supplies food pantries and feeding programs across South Mississippi. The food collected right here in Moss Point will be distributed back into our community to help local families who need it most. Every single can stays close to home.

To everyone who dropped off a donation, volunteered their time, or simply shared the word, thank you. You made the Moss Point March of the Mayors food drive something this city can be proud of.

This is what Moss Point looks like when it moves together. 💙
