Smokin the River City brought energy, excitement, and the unmistakable smell of barbecue to downtown Moss Point. The event packed Main Street with teams and visitors from across the region, marking another major success for The River City.
Events like this are exactly what drive downtown development. Each one proves that Moss Point can host large gatherings that attract real crowds. Thousands of people spent the weekend here, eating at local restaurants, booking hotel rooms, and shopping with local vendors. That kind of foot traffic shows why downtown Moss Point is becoming a prime area for business growth and investment.
The event was led by Joshua Borden, President of the Moss Point Main Street Association. Working with the city and community partners, he helped gather more than thirty sponsors in less than two months. Their combined support made it possible to deliver a full weekend of competition, entertainment, and family fun.
Teams came from across Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas. The furthest group traveled from Houston and took home three trophies. But the biggest win stayed right here in Moss Point — River City Barbecue claimed the Grand Champion title, earning a trophy sponsored by Hog Addiction and B&B Charcoal, two well-known names in the barbecue world.
The crowd reached far beyond the Coast. Attendees came from Canada, Georgia, and several major cities in Texas. Many stayed in town for nearly five days, eating at Sugar Beans, River City Café, and Tootsie on the River. For Moss Point businesses, that meant steady traffic and a strong economic boost throughout the weekend.
The event ran smoothly from start to finish. The city’s security team reported zero incidents and praised how well the festival was managed. Families enjoyed two full days of good food, music, and community.
The fireworks show was a standout moment — seven minutes of color and sound that capped off a weekend to remember. Mayor Billy Knight said it best: “Seven powerful minutes.”
Sponsors have already confirmed they will return, and new partners have shown interest in joining next year. Organizers plan to select a date that maximizes attendance and allows even more visitors to experience what Moss Point has to offer.
Smokin the River City is now a signature event for the city. A celebration of great food, strong teamwork, and the growing community pride that defines The River City.
