Section 8 and Housing Help in Moss Point: Where to Start

The City does not run Section 8, but help exists. Here is exactly who to contact for vouchers, repairs, and rental assistance.

Article

Housing help in Moss Point matters because few things matter more to a family than the place they live. Whether you need help with rent, a path to rebuilding after a storm, or just a clear place to begin, real programs are ready to help, and the City wants every resident to reach them quickly. Here is where each kind of help lives, all in one place.

Help paying rent: Housing Choice Vouchers

The Housing Choice Voucher program, the one most people know as Section 8, helps families afford private apartments and homes by paying a portion of the rent directly to the landlord. Moss Point families apply through the South Mississippi Housing Authority, the regional agency formerly known as Mississippi Regional Housing Authority No. VIII, which serves fourteen counties across south Mississippi, including Jackson County. The authority’s team can tell you whether the waiting list is open, what documents to gather, and where your application stands. Call (228) 248-1030 or start at their website.

Rebuilding after the storms

The tornadoes and straight-line winds of March 2023, June 2023, and April 2024 left damage some Moss Point families are still living with, and the City has worked to make sure those families are not forgotten. Through the Mississippi Homeowner Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program, eligible homeowners can receive up to $175,000 to repair or completely rebuild a storm-damaged home, and destroyed manufactured homes are replaced with permanent construction. The City partnered with the Mississippi Development Authority to bring the program to residents; our announcement walks through eligibility, or go straight to MSHousingRecovery.com.

More housing help in Moss Point through HUD

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development backs most housing assistance nationwide, and its resources go well beyond vouchers. HUD explains how Housing Choice Vouchers work from start to finish, and its Mississippi resource page gathers housing counseling agencies, rental resources, and state programs in one place. A HUD-approved housing counselor can help you sort out which program fits your situation.

How the City stands with you

The City of Moss Point works on housing in its own ways. The City takes part in Community Development Block Grant planning and holds public hearings on how those dollars get used. If you are ever unsure where to start, call anyway. Pointing residents to the right door is part of the job, and the people who answer are glad to do it.
