Why Moss Point City Offices Close and What This Day Really Means

On Monday, May 26, 2025, all Moss Point city offices will be closed for Memorial Day. This includes Administration, Municipal Court, and Utility Department services. Offices will reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m. Emergency and public safety teams are always on duty if you need them.

The truth about Memorial Day is this. The tradition started in Mississippi. After the Civil War ended, Columbus, Mississippi was filled with grief. In April 1866, a group of women walked into Friendship Cemetery and decorated the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. They honored every sacrifice, regardless of the uniform. This act was not about sides. It was about simple respect and the need to heal.

Word spread quickly. The North paid attention. Judge and poet Francis Miles Finch wrote “The Blue and the Gray” after learning what happened in Columbus. His poem captured the spirit of honoring every fallen soldier. From there, the tradition moved beyond Mississippi and became a national act of remembrance.

Memorial Day grew from this moment. At its core, the day is about remembering those who gave their lives in service. It is about families who lost loved ones. It is about the cost of freedom, paid in full by people who never came home.

When Moss Point closes its offices on Memorial Day, we join with the rest of the nation, but we also remember our place in history. The story began here. The first flowers, the first shared sorrow, the first steps toward real healing, Mississippi led the way. Every time you see a flag at half-staff or a grave decorated with care, you are witnessing a tradition that started in our own backyard.

As you enjoy this Memorial Day, take a minute to pause. Remember the reason. Teach your children the truth about how this day began. Honor those who gave everything.

City offices will be ready to serve you again on Tuesday morning. Until then, Moss Point stands with the rest of Mississippi in true remembrance.
